Step 6 – Select the Software

Now we get to a critical decision point – a mistake made here can cost you a lot of time and money. And there is a bewildering array of options to choose from with a huge range in costs. Many are free, or at least they pretend to be.

Here are the three basic options

Buy the software (get a perpetual licence)

Rent (subscribe to) the software or get it as a service (SaaS)

Get it in a bundle with your hosting

Forget the hype, the jargon and the pretty images

Here are the most important considerations

Has it been around for at least a few years?

Can I get support for it?

Does it have an established user community?

If it is rented, or included in my hosting service, can I cancel the contract easily?

Ask yourself two questions

Will it be a better use of my time to learn how to build a website, or to build my business?

If everything goes pear-shaped, can I bail out easily?
