Step 5 – Design the site

You wouldn’t start building a house without having a design first and you wouldn’t start building the walls without first putting down good foundations. The basic site design is what you decide on before you start building your website.

Here are the two main questions to ask

What do I need now?

Where do I want to go?

There are 6 basic site designs

Single page contact site – you should be able to do this one yourself, maybe with a bit of help with graphics.

5-page simple site – most web building software will provide templates to help you do this yourself, maybe with a bit of help with content writing. But don’t believe the ads that say you can do it yourself in a couple of hours – it’s not that easy.

Multi-page complex site – don’t think of doing this yourself unless you have lots of time and patience.

Simple eCommerce site – this adds the “Buy Now” button for a single, or small number of products, and provides a payment gateway for credit cards and PayPal.

Ecommerce site with catalogue – as the name suggests, this option adds a multi-product online catalogue together with payment and delivery options.

Dynamic web sites – these sites provide your customers with the ability to interact directly with your business.
